This Is American Soccer, US Soccer, MNT, WNT, and MLS - Tackling the subject of Soccer in the US, and worldwide.

unity in a shirt?

What’s Johnson thinking? Maybe that he’ll never see this jersey again.

We’re in the midst of a nice little tourney, and another is loaded in the barrel. 2007 should be a drawing some new eyes to US Soccer. It has, kind of. For instance, the NY Times staff’s soccer fans have come out of the woodwork to cover the Gold Cup. And my favorite (the only?) on-line magazine, Slate (ok, Salon is good too, but not as quirky), has gotten into the mix with a slideshow through the history of US Soccer Jerseys. It’s as topical as it gets - this is Slate after all - but a good question is asked:

“Who’s ever heard of an army that has to change its uniform every year?”

more after the jump…

The author come critic of the slideshow is Michael Agovino, who was part of the soccer-fiending media mob with whom I attended a recent Red Bulls game.

He is a soccer guy and has some worthwhile points. It’s not as if Slate just threw this together to take a shot at soccer, though that could be exactly why they bought it from Michael. I’ve gone on record in the past, more or less agreeing with the criticisms. From US MNT to MLS kits, I’ve yet to fall in love with any of them, usually considering the plainest jerseys to win out… but I’ve always been a solid color kind of guy.

There’s nothing scientific about personal or pop culture taste, so go to town: opinions are welcome in the comments section below.

That red shirt you posted is the best thing the USMNT has worn in recent history. They should make that our regular shirt, because:
1) They kick ass
2) They’re red. How great would it be if Sam’s Army could still wear red AND be wearing a US shirt at a game.

The shirts we wore up until 2005 were alright. These new ones aren’t too good.

I saw this before I came here today and was surprised to see it here as well. The slideshow somewhat makes a point, and we do change it up every now and then. However, I also think the USA needs an iconic look. I really love the blue pinstripes and would love it if that were the primary and the DTOM were the secondary. This would be great because there aren’t many teams with pinstripes (Boca Juniors comes to mind but the stripes are very close together, and on TV it looks like a grayish shirt). Also, the DTOM kit is very recognizable and is representative of us very well. It also nods to the 1950 shirt. Its not that I don’t like the white or navy kit, (I have a custom white one) its just that I prefer these two. Hey, I would like to know your thoughts, Mr. Spangler, as well! Thanks and I always enjoy your blog.

speaking of jerseys have you seen chelsea’s new away kits? they look absolutely ridiculous, yellow would’ve been fine, but these look like the kind of yellow that those glow in the dark dinosaurs you had when you were nine were made of. ugliest things ive ever seen

You got three colors to pick from lets make a decision and stick with it.

I had been calling for a red kit for years for the MNT and love the DTOM version. If only US Soccer had some class running the show instead of wannabe marketing gurus…

…hopefully we can establish ourselves in the red kits (not unlike the WNT) eventually.

I love the DTOM jersey and wish it could be our primary one. I don’t care what else they want to do, experiment for the secondary one, maybe use the pinstripes whatever. Just please use some version of the DTOM jersey, take off the snake and if you have to change the crest fine I guess but man its good.

Thats the kind of jersey I’d buy in an instant. *cue US Soccer unveiling the fresh new Magic Eye jersey*

Yeah the article does a prove a point. Recently i read an article about the University of Central Florida’s logo change, basically teams try to make things look all around great but don’t have an iconic figure, i think team USA is in a boat like UCF is, they cant find an iconic figure like teams that have huge icons such as the University of Miami’s U, or the UGA G, i think if USA wants a good marketing approach and an identity they need to find it! im sick of seeing the team in crappy half assed jerseys when 3rd world countrys are in awesome iconic figure jerseys. I didnt see anyone talk about the USA logo badge, thats the thing that bothers me the most, i seriously think it looks really cheap with that crappy flying soccer ball, while other country’s use their coat of arms or something better, how about a nice pissed off eagle on that badge? i love the soccer team but if they wanna play good they gotta look good too!
