spinach ice cream

Vanilla ice cream and sauteed spinach: two things I love that no one would say go well together - kind of like soccer and snow. It wasn’t what I was hoping for. You just knew it would be a defensive, ball control game, with little to talk about on the field, so let’s pull back. Besides a saddening day against Canada, the team has looked strong, albeit against lesser opponents. It makes we wish (in a what-the-hell-am-I-thinking kind of way) that we would play Mexico on a neutral site before the tournament. I can’t think of a better game to see where we are at. No other game would mean as much or feel as intense. Obviously a loss would be demoralizing to the losing team, and this is why it will never happen. I guess I’ll have to settle for playing Germany in a few weeks.

Think I am looking past Poland, the first real team we’ve seen since the Tricolors? Add the fact that the game was in Germany, and I was much more interested than I have been in months. Of course this is comparing excitement to extreme excitement.

I knew the game would be tense and unorganized, because of the atmosphere. And by atmosphere, I mean snow. Cold described the weather and the game. Warm-up meant something more immediate than preparation for the finals. I counted two maybes on the starting roster. There were only two guys who may not be on the team come this summer. Zavagnin and Twellman may or may not be on the roster, but the rest of the players will be, the only question being much they will play. Will Eddie Johnson start as he did tonight (will he be healthy)? Berhalter or Bacanegro? Lewis at left back? This just hints at how both the back and front lines are still a bit of a mess (except for 210 pounds of pure muscle – Gooch the Manhandler). There are still guys like Reyna and Pope who weren’t at the game, but while we are still far from a final squad, this game was the closest yet.

GOAL!!!!!!

Ok, you caught me, I’m writing this during the game – and what with the past tense at my disposal, I figured you’d be none the wiser. Tonight, spell-check is a good friend.

An ugly goal, but tactically, it was beautiful. Twellman giving up his body, catching a deflection off a keeper’s punch. Dempsey crashing the boards like a good rebounder. That’s the kind of goal we will need this summer. Right place, right time, positioning, filling holes, and hard work. These are what separates the best teams from the great teams. Eh, Ronaldhino doesn’t hurt either. Chelsea lost! Chelsea lost! God love it, Chelsea lost! Sorry, I had to say that. I’m no Barca fan, but as the bumper sticker cliché propositions, my two favorite teams are Arsenal and whoever is playing Chelsea.

In a way, this game was a lot like recent games thanks to Dempsey and Twellman. No other players have played as hard or been as opportunistic. While I have to think Dempsey is in, the battle for forwards isn’t as clear-cut. Twellman, all 5-feet-11-inches of him, may still be on the outside of the bubble. His play in box has been stellar – no one tries harder – but I’m not convinced his on-the-ball skills are better than our other choices. I think whether or not he makes the team and plays will be an indicator of our strategy. If we want skillful experience, maybe we go in another direction, but if we want athletic play, always something we are applauded and derided for, than Taylor is here to stay.

My one random game note, besides the absolute joy of having Onyewu back on the field, is the presence of Tim Howard. He has seen precious little time on the field – Keller has co-opted much of it – and deserves more of a look, for the US MNT and his club team. Somebody must see something I don’t, although I confess youth is not always on a keeper’s side as it is outside the penalty box.

So one day closer – to the summer and to the final roster. Uniforms, check; destroying lesser teams, check; beating a qualified team, check; able to advance? Win it all? Like Jason Lee in his new sitcom, we’ll need some mystical help to check off the whole list, but, like Earl, we can get happier with every one we can scratch off.

Well… unfortunatley i missed out on what seems to be that was a great game. I was at school. but i got home in time to see the recaps and the highlights. I saw dempseys goals, that is what makes this American Soccer. And differs us from other soccer countries. American soccer is rising if u watch it closly. Dempsey picks off the rebound like a basketball player. Some of the cross passes were played like a American football game, as if it was planed. The way U.S. plays is what makes us great and is way were racking up these W’s on these freindlys. And coming up is nothing but success. Mexico beat Ghana so if we can beat mexico we can beat Ghana. Everybody said the test will be the freindly Vs Germany. But they lost 4 to 1 by Italy. So i have confidence going up against germany unless Oliver Kahn can, can really hold down the net. But Italy will be a problem if they did that to germany even without Totti. if all goes well American style soccer will prevail. on the next issue Left Back. who will be LB for U.S. Lewis seems to play very well, but at times is more of a left midfielder rather than a L Back. my choice would Be Bocanegra. Cause if he has to fly down the flanks he can. And with his experience in the premeirship for Fulham. But then theres also Berhalter who plays just as well. Bruce Arena has got some choices on the road ahead of him. Theres one thing the stuck to my side in this post. Twellman 5′ 11″ does hieght make a difference? Maybe as a striker to get the headers in. But me im 15 and a right wing, and attacking center mid. And most of the times the other teams have players double my size, and I time and time again get up to get the 50/50 balls before all the bigger guys just cause i can hop. Im 5′6″ most players are much taller then that so if i hope to see MLS or anything else one day. Do i have to be taller? Despite winning almost all m 50/50 balls and playing key roles. Aside from that great Post Adam i really enjoyed.

Size does not matter just as long as you have the ability to compensate it. This is true in all sports, look at not only taylor twellman, but Basketball players allen iverson and shaun Marion are some of the best, while lofa tatupu has a bright future in the nfl. How tall was Barry Sanders? or Emmit Smith? Clearly, its not as much about size as it is about skill.

Gooch the manhandler :D thank god (or whatever form of higher being you choose) he’s on our team!

I feel like it’s a stretch to say EJ made the roster already. He hasn’t been very effective lately. Twellman may not have the same skills as EJ, but he has been getting the job done.

O and the Chelsea/Barcelona game was pretty exciting, but chelsea did a heck of a job keeping it so intense with a red card against them. I remember the announcer saying the card wasn’t warranted- when it totally was… I’m so glad they lost though, or people would actually think they are amazing.

Success in Germany will depend on hard work and sacrifice….Dempsey and Twellman currently appear to be the hardest working two on the team…and success, thus far, has been theirs. Dempsey has been banged up more than his share in each outing and from what Twellman has shown so far, he will dive head first into anything for the chance to put the ball in the back of the net. If the entire team can put in the kind of effort these two have…sUcceSs is Inevitable!

The goal was due to the goalkeeper’s mistake and Dempsey did good to make him pay for it. Twellman, on the other hand, had little impact on the rest of the game.

But more importantly, Twellman is effective when the game doesn’t count. He was invisible in the qualifiers he played in and, if he gets his chance, will be invisible in the World Cup too (scoring against Panama when we’ve already qualified doesn’t really count). He went one goal in 13 appearances in 2005. So did Danny Califf. Leave him at home and bring someone who can make a difference.

so with another victory down and germany in a few weeks the question is who is going to be partnered up with mcbride on the the attack it comes down between the two strikers eddie johnson, and taylor twellman.? who does mcbride go striker by himself and throw on an extra midfielder ? my bets are on Johnson.
