This Is American Soccer, US Soccer, MNT, WNT, and MLS - Tackling the subject of Soccer in the US, and worldwide.

no way jose

I don’t speak Spanish, so it’s hard for me to know exactly what’s in this article from Mexican paper La Opinion, but while speaking to ESPN Soccernet’s Jeff Carlysle on Saturday, I learned it says former Argentina coach Jose Pekerman is going to be announced as the next US MNT manager. As my head began exploding (I kept my maturity until I finished my interview with Jeff, which you’ll see in a few days), I tried to put onto paper just how wrong I thought this would be - I’ve long been in the camp that wants to hand over everything to Klinsmann. I started writing. Saturday turned to Sunday - still writing. I saw the future of US Soccer going down the toilet. Maybe a bit a harsh. Maybe I just was witnessing American Soccer settle for the second best, but either way, this is, was, better be wrong, wrong, wrong.

I was halfway through the second page, derailing the Pekerman proposition. It was something to do with the fact that he doesn’t even speak English. I went searching online to ensure I was right on this fact, when I eventually get to Yanks Abroad. I search Pekerman and an op-ed from Mark Flannery pops up. Seems he beat me to the punch and said just about everything I wanted to. So, in proper blogging fashion, I’ll let him say it. No shame in that, I’ll add it in, whatever the outcome, to my answer to the essay question (see below).

Oh my god…this sucks.

Why would we go with Pekerman? Why wouldn’t we look to the future? Are you kidding me?

I remember watching the Argentina game going “Wow…just like Bruce in the Italy game, this guy isn’t playing for the win. How the hell do you keep Messi on the bench?”

Pekerman disrespected the cycle of football by refusing to let an upcoming genius take the field - he denied Messi the opportunity to do something magical and unforgettable with the stakes high.

So…one would have to assume he will disrespect the cycle of football and thwart the progress of an up-and-coming nation that COULD silence the globe’s critics if it had a manager with a clue.

i hope this is wrong. How could we hire someone who doesnt speak english? he seems a fine coach, but an unusual pick for the MNT.

La opinion is a dubious paper.
If it’s true, then its still not horrible - Pekerman isn’t really a bad coach, he did a copacetic job with Argentina and its youth teams, and hopefully he can replicate that success here.
I wonder why US Soccer is taking so long to name a coach, the friendly against Denmark is soon and presumably USSF would want to give the national team ample time with the coach before being thrust into a game.

I agree shaj.

we could do worse than pekerman, but now i;m thinking the upper brass of USSF are the issue, not the coach. i wonder how those guys get those jobs, and how long they get to keep them. i’d like to see some passion from Sunil, or whatever his name is. i dont see his passion for soccer.
