dempsey’s labor day

It wasn’t virtuosic, but that’s not Clint Dempsey’s game. Not yet anyhow, but it might not be too far down the road, because hard nose to the highway is this kid’s manner, and it showed on Saturday as he had a head (or foot) in each of Fulham’s 3 goals to tie Tottenham, one of the stronger teams (on paper) in the English Premier League. I can’t think of a more apt weekend for his production, as Clint is the definition of work, effort, labor.

It begs the question, as we celebrate the nation’s hard workers - most productive in the world they say - which American has had the best single-game perfomance?

One that always sticks in my mind is Tony Sanneh’s performance against Germany in the 2002 World Cup. I’ll still put that game down as the best I’ve seen the US play, even though it was a loss, an Sanneh was killing himself in that one.

Keller V Brasil.

and yes- dempsey was terrific on saturday. That performance should’ve cemented him into the starting XI.

work work work. he looked like one of the top players over the weekend. dempsey showed what it takes to play at that level as i believe his skill is finally matching what he has always thought.
bravo dempsey……..keep it coming.

Hey Adam, so where should American fans without FSC go to see highlights of our Yankee heroes like Dempsey now that netresult has banned videos on such sites as youtube?

Great question Adam-

I think Jason has a good point there with Sanneh’s performance. It was such a huge game and really we should have won it. But Sanneh just had one of those games where he played above himself. He was a monster. In particular as the game was winding down. The guy was everywhere doing everything.

The Keller game against Brazil is another good one as mentioned above. I believe that is the game that Ramario, who was at the top of his game at the time, said the Keller was the best keeper he had ever faced.

Brad Friedel, also in WC 2002, played out of his head when he stopped countless shots and two PK’s during the game. Was that the Portugal game?

Clint’s game was spot on Saturday. As the game wore on he kept exerting himself. He played a part in all three goals and in the 92nd min. he was the man all the way back down in the Fulham defensive third who broke up the Spurs attack and started the play going the other way.

But no, this does not assure him of a regular spot. He still has to show consistency as there are some good forwards on that team and he still has not shown well when he has played out wide. I think as Clint is developing as a player he is turning into more of a forward or an attacking midfielder which is exactly what Bruce Arena penned him to be several years ago. He was once quoted as saying that he wanted Dempsey to have more confidence in being more of a Frank Lampard type player. Hopefully minus the attitude and the extra layer of fat!

J -

the fulham website is one of the better EPL team sites, offering team videos, highlights, etc. If Youtube ends up squashing all these videos, team websites are probably your best bet, as the powers that be aren’t going to just forget about digital videos once they are pulled from Youtube. It may be a wild goose chase at times, but somewhere will always have the videos posted. illegal or otherwise.
