This Is American Soccer, US Soccer, MNT, WNT, and MLS - Tackling the subject of Soccer in the US, and worldwide.

From Irv Smalls (back, center, with the shaved head in the above photo), Director of FC Harlem:

On Saturday Dutch soccer star Edgar Davids and his street soccer team from the Netherlands, Monta, paid a visit to FC HARLEM’s travel teams. ESPN filmed the piece on the handball courts at Jacob Schiff Playground. The Harlem community turned out to watch our FC HARLEM LIONS learn some tricks from some of the best free style players in the world before taking them on in a small-sided 4v4 game. FC HARLEM players held their own, In fact Monta and Edgar were so impressed with a few of our high school players they invited some of them to play on Sunday against the NIKE Futsal Team, going as far as to inquire about their availability to travel with them!

I was unable to attend the fun this weekend, but Irv was nice enough to share a few photos after the jump. Every league, director, coach, and parent out there should be watching this guy…

That is just tremendous. An ex-Barça and Spurs star hanging with young NYC players is inspiring. Irv Smalls is doing God’s work up there. Is this going to be on ESPN anytime soon?

This looks like a great event. Wish i knew about it previously. Maybe Edgar will remain in the US to play with in the MLS. http://WWW.FUTBOLR.COM

I’ve worked in a few youth organizations in Harlem, most notably Harlem R.B.I. (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities), and EHTP (East Harlem Tutorial Program), and it’s amazing how soccer’s taken off over just the past two or three years. Part of it has to do with the fact that so many Mexican and South American families are moving in and have passed the soccer bug to their kids. What’s really amazing to watch is how the proliferation of soccer fields (especially in East Harlem) has coincided with this and how black and Puerto Rican kids are picking up the game as well. The US National team needs to take notice of this, as the crop of inner-city kids willing to take up the other football that they’ve been searching for since the 80’s (think EJ) is right here in Harlem. Nice to see Davids come over as well; I hope he maintains some links. Irv’s doing great work and I hope he continues.

FC HARLEM has served the community for 17 years; it’s definitely nothing new to us. There’s an old saying: Good things come to those who do good things…..More to come !

Hey guys - Kevin Wildes here. I’m one of the directors / producers of the project along with Dave Jacoby. We had a great time in Harlem and are getting into the edit next week. The whole weekend was filmed and could morph into a lot of different things so be on the lookout for something soon. Thanks! KW

I’m from CA and I think that was a good wake up call that soccer is reaching youth everywhere. It’s good to see the focus and determination to excel at something so positive. Lastly, I have to give a lot of props for Irv for doing work in this manner it’s great to see.
