It might not be true but I have the perception that soccer stars here are more approachable than those in other sports. The typical MLS player doesn’t make that much more than anyone else in the city and often far less. I would think living off the terrible salaries they give to development players would be quite humbling. Of the few sports stars I’ve run into personally only the MLS players haven’t brushed me off. Stuck in an airport and wearing a Dynamo jersey I happen to be near a flight they got off and the players approached me to talk after seeing the jersey. Waibel went so far as to thank me for supporting the team before heading off. What other sport would the athletes be that humble and personable?
