the barometer
Our best male and female soccer players made news this weekend. Landon Donovan won his fourth Player of the Year award and Abby Wambach conducted a free clinic for about 600 kids in her hometown of Rochester. So why am I so sad?
There is no doubt Landon Donovan is the best American soccer player. And little more than that fact won him the Honda Player of the Year Award, which is a big title for ‘best guy on one team’. Tim Howard and Carlos Bocanegra came in as very distant runners up. I can picture voters agreeing with a blasé, “I guess so.” You can’t blame Landon - if you are giving out this award, he deserves it - but you can blame American soccer. It’s like third-place games in the World Cup. This trophy should be put on the shelf for good.
And speaking of things which we don’t need…
Interviewed during a youth clinic, US WNT star forward Abby Wambach firmly stood by the team’s ostracizing of their goal keeper. I can’t believe 1, we are still talking about this. And 2, that the team thinks they are the good guys after participating in the ruination of own of their own. What does that teach our kids?
Which of the 12 steps is ‘admitting you have a problem’? We’re a few shy of that today. It’s hard to imagine Hope Solo ever playing international soccer again, though I guess she could wait out the retirement of the old guard which undoubtedly is leading this prosecution. And you thought Brianna Scurry was rusty? Seriously, its not 2004 anymore. I wonder what future team leaders like never-saw-the-field-in-China Natasha Kai or Lindsey Tarpley have to say on this. Ugh. Andrea Canales picks it up while I lose my mind.
I guess Alge Crumpler can expect to be thrown to the wolves as well.

Sadly, admitting you have a problem is STEP ONE, meaning that, by your assessment, the WNT is at Step -3.

Hey Adam I just wanted to say thanks for all your coverage and concern about the WNT issues. I know I was bugging you back when the cup started to have more stuff about it and.. well… who would have thought it would end up like this. I’m so disappointed in the entire team, especially Scurry, Wambach, and Lilly. I’ve never been much of a Scurry fan, and laughed out loud the night before the Brazil match with how dead on you were with the announcement that Scurry was in and therefor the trophy was out. It’s a sad year for women’s soccer. I can only hope Tony gets back in as head coach and makes some drastic changes to get this runaway train back on track.
