This Is American Soccer, US Soccer, MNT, WNT, and MLS - Tackling the subject of Soccer in the US, and worldwide.

the jewel of the duwamish

The treasure is not always what it seems. Didn’t Jack T. Colton teach us anything? It’s not a shiny, Tiffany-made cup. It’s not a three-day party of networking and one-night stands. It’s a moment where truth and disbelief bleed into the surreal. It’s a band on parade with a madcap leader out front. It’s the fans and all the swag they buy, creating a cohesive gang of support whereby the entire stadium is a supporters group. It’s the stadium with as many images of Sounders as Seahawks. It’s the Emerald City itself–the temporary end of the yellow brick road until there is proof that it can be extended. Seattle didn’t pave the way for American soccer, and stadium banners be damned it didn’t save MLS, but it steamrolled every obstacle so far in the adolescent league’s path (well, there is that one little munchkin about the turf).

So when the tears crept toward my eyes and memory transported me back to the banks of the Thames, I knew I found what I had been seeking. The sousaphones swirled around me like a tornado, the drums hammered me with their thunder.

Tap Tap Tap. Tap Tap Tap. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.

With apologies to Salt Lake and LA, this weekend was all about Seattle. Not since my first trip to London did a soccer scene affect me so much. I grew up in the empty Omni of the Atlanta Attack, in a NBA/MLB family. Soccer was my game alone. Soccer was the badge I wore, the target others saw. Just knowing some in the younger generations need not deal with all that makes me proud. But not too proud to cry.

After 5 days of clouds and rain, the sky opened up as if on a timer. Pioneer Square would be soon filling with fans, one being Mother Nature. I was headed that way.

Nick Cannon for the day.

—-

Running up to the game I was hearing lots about Sounders fans dumping tickets. Neither the streets or stadium reflected that. They were out in force.

—-

heaven reflected.

Underdog? Try underrated. Beckerman is a beast–a lion with locks–and though he missed a PK, he was the best field player out there last night for 120 minutes. I told you he would be a week ago on Waiting For Gaetjens.

Words cannot give enough credit to Drew Carey and the Sounders ownership group, but there were other factors, I believe, that played a strong part in this success…

—-

Been a rough few years for this guy I guess, but his loss was the Sounders’ gain. Sometimes you have to lose in order to learn to win. Seattle learned it off the field; For RSL, that lesson came on the field.

Lesson 1A: put the stadium in a commercially viable downtown location. Still waiting for the NYC MSG for soccer. Beckham, Mr. 20th Owner, make it happen. Prove you really care.

—-

“So your a face painter?”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but I think we saw the two best ownership groups in MLS this weekend. RSL fans outnumbered Galaxy fans by hundreds, thanks in part to JetBlue charters from SLC. What happened LA, was there a Laker game this weekend?

One of the biggest MLS crowd I have ever seen. 46,000 strong.

I don’t believe it literally, but I feel it.

One is the loneliest number. Luckily, Degree “protects men who take risks.”

Good Stuff from Rimando.

Can’t blame Saunders, but good luck trying to tell him that.

I dropped my Mangosteen!!!!

Thank you Seattle. Thank you MLS. Not for a great weekend. But a great year. Here’s to many more.

Follow TIAS on Twitter and listen to the new podcast Waiting For Gaetjens with myself and Greg Lalas. Thanks to all of those who came out to Kells on Friday night in Seattle and partied with the Designated Players.

I love this! You are a wonderful writer and you are talking about what I love, my home town and my home team. Seattle Sounders! I invite you to come up next season to catch a Sounders game. You must come up for 2010 opening night Sounders vs the Union. That will bring tears to your eyes.

Awhile back you wrote about my other favorite team Fulham so you are on a roll. Thanks so much.

I haven’t been able to properly follow the entire league this season, but I understand that RSL deserves it.
Many guys in Europe (at least the ones I talk to) are pretty upset with the Playoffs system the MLS have.
Do you think we’ll ever see a MLS tournament without Playoffs? A more “European” league in terms of rewarding the team that gets more points along the season?
I try to explain to them that the Playoffs go really deep in the American sports culture, and that it’s hard to break. Media and sponsors would not agree with a “Playoff-less” championship, I guess.
What’s your take on this, Adam?

you pretty much got it Ariel–especially the part about the USA, pro sports, and playoffs.

Garber said a lot this weekend and in his state-of-the-league address that this issue may be the 1st thing the next commissioner changes, but until then, playoffs it is. I gotta say, I like the playoffs too. I’m with Don on this one, though some sort of better prize for the Supporters Shield winner needs to be figured out–whether that is playoff seeding, skip right to the championship game, or something else, I’m not sure yet.

Playoffs will never leave MLS. They might get tweaked, but there will always be a “title match”. The same European fans who criticize our playoffs are filling stadiums for those newfangled promotion playoffs. Just because it’s European tradition doesn’t make it better.

The growth in the league has dramatically improved the playoffs because it’s getting harder to qualify. In two seasons, MLS has 18 teams, and 8 playoff teams feel fairly similar to making Europe from the EPL. In other words, teams that have earned something through their play in the league. So if they can win the knockout tournament at the end, they deserve it.

For me, MLS is on the right track exploring how to take MLS Cup away from a neutral site. Seattle did the league proud this season, but in big picture, MLS fans deserve better. But I don’t think they should give the top team 3 weeks off and a straight ticket. I say just keep the playoffs as is and schedule MLS Cup on the fly.

Conmebol is eager to have MLS teams playing the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana.
Maybe the Supporters Shield winner could be the actual MLS champion, and the playoffs could be used to qualify the best 8 franchises to the Concacaf Champions League, the Libertadores and the Sudamericana.
Crazy Idea, I know…

Adam,
Wait until Portland joins the MLS. Then go to a Timbers game. Then I will see what you write. The Timbers/ Sounders rivalry is like nothing American Soccer has everseen.

Adam, I love your pictures. I’m in a few of them. In the picture of Drew Carey hunched over I’m the one behind his head waving the Real Salt Lake flag. Are you cool with me using some of these pictures in my own blog?

I agree that the playoff system is essential in the American sports culture. While the table system works great in Europe we Americans need playoffs. I’m also looking forward to MLS getting away from a neutral location for a final. It needs to be at the home field of the team higher on the table. This puts more importance into the regular season as well as makes the final more meaningful to attending fans.

I also want to comment on Seattle. I was thoroughly impressed with the passion Seattle has for the game. All around the city I saw just as much support for the Sounders as I did for the Seahawks. Though Real Salt Lake are now the first to get a championship they are nowhere near that status with the Jazz yet.

The people of Seattle were fantastic hosts to us as we visited to see our team play in the final. I am extremely grateful for the experience I had there.

[...] Cup tears runneth over again, but not like last year. The tears here aren’t produced by a near-perfect inner-city setting or Drew Carrey and his [...]
