meal tickets: part three
He’s my break out star this month. He’ll end up on a different, higher profile team by next season. He is the future of soccer. The next Ronaldinho will be his size, if not bigger. It’s just a matter of time. It’s just a matter of time – how many times have soccer fans been saying that? Just wait, American soccer will be a powerhouse. American players will be there with the best in the world. American soccer will win a world cup. It’s just a matter of time.
It’s just a matter of time before we’re eliminated. That’s what more media outlets are saying recently. They don’t believe in our youth; they don’t believe we’ll get out of our difficult group; and if they do, they surely have us getting rocked by Brazil. But one thing they all agree on, is that Gooch has a big team and a bigger contract in his future. When you’re right, you’re right.
It’s our New Year’s Eve; it’s our Christmas Eve; It’s the night before Hanukkah - with night after night of gifts. It’s the night before the best present a soccer fan could ask for. So clean up, fix your hair, find a comfortable chair, and take a minute to get to know your American star preparing to stick it to the world, one Borgetti at a time.

You know it’s a funny thing for me to see people talk about Gooch’s size.
As someone who is new to soccer I don’t bat an eyelash at it. He’s what, 6′4″ and 210. Big strong and fast. So what?
There are a ton of guys in this country like that except they are all playing basketball or football.
I always hear how someone that large really isn’t built for the game. There seems to be a bias against guys Gooch’s size.
Maybe this is where the US can set itself apart? Changing the assumptions about who can or should be playing the game.
We have some real talent out there athletically.
We need to show Gooch out there playing not only because he is great but also to show some of the kids out there who aren’t going to be Beasley sized when they grow up that they have a place too?

interesting adam, but frankly it doesnt matter your size in soccer as long as you know how to do the best part in your position, take a look at ecuador player that i saw their latest game last night, jose perlaza (6 feet 3 inches) and for a defender like him he is more then like a giant, or peter crouch ( 6 feet 5 inches), truly if many potential soccer ahtletes in the states with taller and bigger sizes then it would be interesting to look at the faces of US team in the next world cup…of course skill and teamwork still needed too,not just bigger sizes…

Size is brought up because its rare to find a big man that can use his feet. it’s not that big men are reluctant to play soccer its that they can’t. you can’t be born big and become a top flight soccer player as you can in the nba or nfl. it’s rare to find a big guy that is as fit, as technically adept, and as smart as gooch is. he moves his feet well which is what sets big men like him, zlatan, crouch, and koller apart from anyone else in their height range. that and they can keep going full speed for a full 90 minutes, a little bit of an upgrade over a guy like shaq who can’t run down the court without keeling over for air.
