adieu adu, but not goodbye

Freddy Adu traded to Salt Lake. I was just about ready to copy and paste and prepare this story for Friday’s Barometer post, but then I read a quote toward the end from Steve Pastorino, Real Salt Lake’s general manager:

“Obviously, we enter this deal knowing what Freddy has said, and that Freddy was just over in England, but we also have had conversations with Freddy and his agent,” said Pastorino. “I’ll go as far as to say we expect Freddy will be on the field when we open up our new stadium in the summer of 2008. I think that’s a pretty good return on investment, provided that we get a couple of seasons out of him.”

Did his trip to Manchester change his mind? Does Elinger have that kind of sway on his former player? At first glance, this would seem just a halfway house on the way to Freddy’s freedom abroad, but Pastorino’s quote changes things a bit. Let the speculation begin.

so does this automatically make RSL a contender?

back with his old coach, who is friends with Bradley, makes Adu look pretty well off when it comes to a national team spot in the coming years. i’m glad he is staying put in MLS. i’d hate to see him leave just before he breaks out. he is still so young.

I couldn’t confirm this, but I heard that when Arena was confronted on why Adu wasn’t invited to camp for the US team his flat out response was “He’s just not ready.” Nothing I’ve seen in his play suggests he’s ready to make the jump. I still think the kid has a lot to prove in MLS before he can think about proving anything abroad.

It will be interesting to see how he influences Salt Lake w/out a supporting cast like DC United.

I am a Manchester fan and word out of their camp was that Adu was not as far along as they would have liked and that, if he is signed, it may just be to draw the American audience. I feel that Adu is a good player who is burdened by expectations that are simply too high. The time in the MLS will be good for his development as a player.
